Who We Are

QUINTIN NDIBONGO
Quintin was born in Washington, D.C. to a Xhosa exile (then, international student) and a Swedish-American mother. When he was 2 years old, his mother took him to Zaire, where he met his father for the first time. He lived in Zaire, Liberia, and Lesotho before settling in Butterworth at the age of nine. In 1987, Quintin’s mixed-origin and the lack of academic opportunities in a then white-ruled Apartheid South Africa led him to the United States to study.
TERESITA NDIBONGO
Teresita was born in a rural, mountain village in northern Mexico. When she was seven years old, her family immigrated to the USA illegally. She grew up in Albuquerque, NM and as the eldest of five children took on much responsibility becoming the family’s translator from age nine, essentially learning to live in two worlds. Through a combination of her God-given abilities and direction from her teachers, she rose to the top academically.

One Of Our Stories

BONGILE SIKANI
Bongile didn’t finish his ILA project, but still won the top award. A few days after the project presentations, I awarded Bongi with his prize—a Smart Kikka phone—at the smibaniso morning assembly. After the assembly he asked, “Can I keep working on my project?� Bongi saw that the communal taps in his village were broken—unable to close or unable to open. He noticed that children were playing
with water. He took on the role of advocate and began making long treks (49km) to the municipal water works. His fiends helped collect money for his taxi fare. Truth is that Bongi’s project was “too big,� but all along the way he worked toward his goal, showing dedication and perseverance. He brought awareness to his community and involved his peers. And he was the only student with his paperwork done on time! This quiet young man had spent the October camp keeping to himself—only coming to life during the talent show, when he danced. But as his question (above) shows�.. He got it! It’s not about the deadline; it’s not about the prize. It is about catching a vision to serve others and then doing it.
In his own word... “People in my community they were very happy because I was taken pictures of the taps. Help community is my thing. I open a meeting in past week to tell them…waste water is not right…I will fix if you take care of them. I do not want my community to look very bad…I have living [here] for many years and don’t want to let it down. I love my place...I like doing positive things…I want to be a great leader�
